Secure Data Delete Pro / User Guide / Features / Wiping Methods
3 Wiping Methods
There are three wiping methods in Secure Data Delete Pro that you can choose from to wipe deleted data securely.
- Fast Secure Delete (Quick but Less Secure)
- Random Fill Data Streams (Balanced Security and Speed)
- Secure Delete - American DoD 5220.22-M (Super Secure)
- Fast Secure Delete (Quick but Less Secure)
This method is like tearing a page out of your notebook and throwing it away. It’s quick, but if someone digs in or uses a recovery tool, they might find the page and piece it back together.
It is useful when you’re in a hurry and don’t care if someone might try to recover the file later. For example: When you want to delete temporary or non-sensitive files like downloaded memes or junk documents.
- Random Fill Data Streams (Balanced Security and Speed)
This method is like tearing the page into small pieces and tossing them into different trash cans, making it difficult to put all pieces back together. In this method, the data is overwritten three times with random, meaningless patterns, making it harder to recover the original content.
The method is perfect for removing moderately sensitive files, such as old tax records, financial documents, or personal photos.
For example: Deleting scanned copies of signed agreements or invoices.
- Secure Delete - American DoD 5220.22-M (Super Secure)
Third is the most secure method, and it is like shredding the page into tiny confetti, burning the confetti, and scattering the ashes in the wind. It's almost impossible for anyone to recover the original page.
- The data is overwritten seven times with random patterns, per the U.S. Department of Defense standards, ensuring that even the most advanced recovery tools can't return the original file.
It is ideal when you want to wipe highly sensitive or confidential data, such as classified business documents, medical records, or government files.
For example: Wiping work-related confidential files before selling or donating your computer.
Which Method Should You Use?
When deciding which method to use, think about how important the file is and how much time you have.
- Fast Secure Delete: This method can be used if the data is not sensitive and you want to save time.
- Random Fill Data Streams: Useful when you want to wipe personal data that you don’t want others to recover.
- American DoD 5220.22-M: For wiping critical, sensitive, or highly confidential information that must never be recovered.
