Fixed – This Device Doesn’t Support Miracast Error on Windows

Dishank Sharma

January 14th, 2023

When a device cannot connect to Miracast enabled display, you face the “Device doesn’t support Miracast error.” If you are struggling with the same issue with your wireless display projection, you are at the right place.

Whether you have experienced the error or want to avoid it forever, this post is for you! Here we will discuss the reasons for the error message and how it can be fixed on Windows.

What is Miracast? Reasons for Your PC Doesn’t Support Miracast Error

Miracast is the standard wireless connection used to establish projection from one device to another without any physical (wired) connection. It is as simple as connecting two displays using an HDMI cable. It is just that with Miracast, no cables are needed.

Most devices today come equipped with Miracast. However, sometimes, your PC may give an error if the device doesn’t support Miracast. Multiple factors come into play when you encounter an error.

Reasons for Miracast connection error

  1. Devices Not Using the Same Wifi Network
  2. Either Device Not Compatible With Miracast
  3. Driver Issues on Your PC (Outdated Network or Display Drivers)
  4. Incorrect Wifi Configuration
  5. Use of External Mirroring Application\

All these are external factors and can be fixed easily. Now that the causes are clear. Let’s move on & talk about the solutions!

Ways to Fix This Device Doesn’t Support Miracast Error on Windows

Fixing the error is simple. Still, before following the below fixes, ensure that all the above-discussed factors are neutral and do not cause errors. To fix the error try these ways, but before that ensure your PC is compatible with Miracast.

To check the compatibility, follow the given steps –

  • Press Windows+X to bring up the quick access menu.
  • From the Quick access menu, choose the Terminal to open.choose terminal
  • In the Terminal Window, use the following command.
    Get-netadapter|select Name, ndis versiontype command
  • Once you have the version identity, you must verify that the Wi-Fi NDIS version exceeds 6.30.
  • After successfully verifying the Wi-Fi version, use the following command to learn more about the Wi-Fi drivers and whether the graphics card and Wi-Fi drivers support wireless display.
  • use command to learn more for wifi driverAfter running this command, look for the Wireless display supported section; both Wi-Fi and graphics card should indicate yes.look for wireless display supported sectionRunning these commands can help verify whether your PC is compatible with the Miracast. You can try to fix the error if the results are as shown here. You can invest in a dedicated Miracast adapter to create wireless projection compatibility

If your PC is compatible, here are a few fixes you can use to resolve the error –

Ensure Your PC and the Device are on the Same Wifi Network

Forgetting to connect two devices on the same wireless network is an honest mistake that anyone can make. Hence, ensure that you are connected to the same Wi-Fi,

  1. Open Settings on Your Windows PC. Use Windows + I shortcut keys to avoid the longer route.
  2. In the settings, open connections and toggle your Wifi On if not already connected.
  3. Choose your Wifi network and click on connect.    choose wifi network
  4. Move to the display device, and check the Wi-Fi connection. Make sure both devices are connected to the same Wi-Fi network you have chosen on your PC.
  5. Make sure both devices are connected on the same and then try to connect.

This should get the job done as it brings both devices to the same level to connect and interact over a network. If the issue persists, move on to the next fix.

Change the Wireless Mode Selection Value

If the device cannot pair using Miracast, it might be due to an error with the mode selection value for your Wi-Fi adapter. The best way to resolve this error is by resetting the value to auto.

Here’s how to do it –

  • Open Run using the Command Windows+R
  • In Run, search for devmgmt.msc top open Device Manager.   devmgmt.msc open device manager
  • Look for your Wi-Fi adapter in the Device Manager and select properties.
    select properties in wifi dapter
  • In Properties, navigate to Advanced options.
  • In the Advanced options, you will find two columns. Under property, select the wireless mode, and in the corresponding column, open the dropdown to choose the dual-band 802.11/a/b/g.select wireless mode
  • Choose it and save the changes.

Once you have done this, try to use the Miracast again. This time it should work fine. In case it still keeps showing this device doesn’t support receiving miracast so you can’t project to it wirelessly, the next fix will help you out!

Update Important Drivers on Your PC

For screen projection to work wirelessly, there are specific drivers that you need to pay attention to. The components that are involved in making it happen are –

  1. Network Adapter Drivers
  2. Display Adapter Drivers
  3. Graphics Drivers

If there’s an issue with these drivers, the connection may be incomplete. Always keep your system drivers updated to ensure that it does not happen. But checking all these components one by one for updates, finding updated drivers, and installing them can be hectic.

The best way to handle this process is by using a dedicated driver updater tool, like Advanced Driver Updater.

The software allows you to scan your PC for outdated drivers through a centralized scan mode. Take a look at how it works to get an idea of how easy it makes the job!

  1. Download the application and install it on your PC. (find the Button below).

download

  1. Run the application. You will find a Start Scan Now button; click on it!  scan outdated driver
  2. The scan will look for outdated drivers on your PC and give you a list to update.
  3. You have the option to update them all at once. Simply click Update All. update all driver
  4. After clicking Update All, wait for the process to finish.

Restart your PC once the software is done updating your drivers. Retry to use the Miracast, and this time it will work!

Troubleshooting Device Doesn’t Support Miracast Error Made Easy!

With the ways mentioned above, you can get your Miracast up and running in no time. While it is understandable that every device today comes with wireless projection compatibility, check your device before implementing any fix.

That is all for this post; drop a line in the comments section to let us know which way fixed the error for you! Good Luck!
