How To Use CHKDSK To Repair A Hard Drive?

The Check Disk (CHKDSK) is an inbuilt Windows tool that can fix file system errors as well as bad sectors on your hard disk to a certain extent. Here are the steps to use this tool.

Method 1  – Use Command Prompt As Administrator

1. Press Win + R to open the RUN box, and type CMD.
2. Press Ctrl + Shift + Enter to open the Command Prompt in Admin mode.
3. Once the Command Prompt window opens in elevated mode, copy and paste the following command, followed by the Enter key.

chkdsk C: /f /r /x

Important : If you want to scan any other drive, then replace “C” with the corresponding drive letter.

* `/f` – Fixes any errors it finds.
* `/r` – Locates bad sectors and recovers readable data.
* `/x` – Forces the drive to dismount before checking (if needed).

4. When you run the CHKDSK command on drive C, you will get the following prompt –

“CHKDSK cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N)”

5. Type “Y” and then hit the Enter key.
6. Reboot your PC and wait for the process to finish.

Note : The time taken for the CHKDSK process to complete will depend on the size and health of your hard disk.

7. After the system restarts, you will find a summary on your desktop. If not, then you can check the Even Viewer logs.
8. Press Win + X to open the Power menu and choose Event Viewer.
9. Next, navigate to Windows Logs, followed by Application.
10. Look for Wininit or Chkdsk entries.

Method 2  – Use The Graphical User Interface Method

1. Press Windows + E to open the File Explorer.
2. Make a right-click on the drive you wish to scan.

3. Choose Properties from the context menu and go to the Tools tab.

4. Locate the Error Checking section and click on the Check button.
5. You might get a prompt message stating “You don’t need to scan this drive”. However, click on the Scan Drive option.

6. If the scan locates errors on your hard drive, then you will get an option to repair your disk.

7. You will receive a message to reboot your PC, and then you have to click Yes.
8. Wait for the process to complete, and it will fix the disk and restart normally.

Note : This method is easy to use, but does not allow the user to access advanced options like bad sector recovery.

Method 3  – Use The CHKDSK Repair Script Method

1. Open the Notepad app on your Windows PC.
2. Copy and paste the following script into the Notepad app.

@echo off
