So without further ado, let’s understand the problem first and then move on to the fixes.

Why does CS-GO Keep Crashing or displaying a black screen on Windows?

The CS-GO crashing error has been around for a while now. Some believe the issue is due to a lack of required resources, while others have found the crashing to continue even with their systems exceeding the minimum requirements to run the game. So what is it, then?

Well, a series of factors cause the game to crash. Some of the most prominent ones are –

  1. Compromised Gaming Files
  2. Outdated Graphics Drivers
  3. Unnecessary Overclocking
  4. Not Using the Original Game Files
  5. Issues with the Game Launcher

If any of these factors sound familiar, you already know it is the culprit. Most of these factors do not appear in the beginning, so users cannot avoid Counter-Strike: Global Offensive crashing on their PCs.

Fortunately, all these issues can be easily fixed. We have got the solutions right here for you! Check out the next section to resolve CS-GO (Counter-Strike: Global Offensive) errors instantly!

Ways to Fix CS-GO Crashing & Freezing on Windows

Way #1 – Verify the Integrity of Game Files

The best part of using Steam as your launcher is that it knows how to handle minor issues with the game files. The ability to verify game files and automatically resolve configuration errors is a game changer for many users. If there appears to be a problem with your CS-GO launching, we recommend you use the following steps –

Step 1 – Open Stream and Go to CS-GO.
Step 2 – Open Properties, and you may find a tab called Local Files.

Open Stream and Go to CS-GO
Step 3 – In the Local Files tab, there’s an option called to verify the integrity of game files

Step 4 – Click on it and initiate the process.
Step 5 – This will go through all the local game files on your system and resolve file errors if found.

Way #2 – Update Graphics Driver

Graphics are a crucial part of your game requirements. If CS-GO flickers the screen and crashes, there are chances that the graphics driver is at fault. In this case, updating drivers is the best thing you can do.

You can refer to our detailed post on ways to update graphics card drivers for a detailed explanation of all the methods.

To resolve graphics driver issues for CS-GO crashing issues, we recommend using Advanced Driver Updater. Here’s how the tool works –

Step 1 – Run the application to find the Start Scan Now option on the home screen.

start scan using advanced driver updater
Step 2 – The scan will fetch information about all the outdated drivers being used on the PC.
Step 3 – Once the scan is over, you can update a particular driver or all.

We recommend updating all, as outdated drivers might interfere with the game.

Step 4 – Let the process run. Once it is over, restart the PC, and you are done.

The only reason why we recommend Advanced Driver Updater over traditional methods is that drivers are often tricky. You do not know if the error is limited to the graphics driver or if other drivers are causing CS-GO to crash. Hence, it is better to update all of them simultaneously, which is a tedious task if you go the manual route.

Way #3 – Restore Overclocked Settings to Default

Overclocking is a great method to run heavy games and applications on a PC lacking resources. However, it can highly impact the performance of your PC if not done correctly. The same may be true for CS-GO randomly crashing.

If you have used an application to overclock your GPU, CPU, or any other component, simply go to the application and toggle it off. The least you can do is change the overclocking configuration to one of the default modes so that it does not overheat your PC and get things back to normal.

Way #4 – Change Game Launch Options in Steam

If none of the above fixes have resolved the crashing error, you can try changing the launch mode using Steam.

There are two launch modes you may try –

Launch the game in -autoconfig mode:

Step 1 – Open Counter-Strike: Global Offensive on Steam and go to its properties.

Open Stream and Go to CS-GO
Step 2 – Look for Set launch options in the General tab in properties.

Set launch options - General tab
Step 3 – In the opened field for launch options, simply type -autoconfig and save changes.

Type autoconfig

Launch the game now, and it will run in the automatic configuration. If this does not do the trick for you, try another launch mode which is – safe-mode.

Here’s how to launch the game in -safe mode:

Step 1 – Open Counter-Strike: Global Offensive on Steam and go to its properties.
Step 2 – Look for Set launch options in the General tab in properties.
Step 3 – In the opened field for launch options, simply type -safe and save changes.

type -safe

Try these modes and check if these do the trick for you, as many have shared that setting modes work with CS-GO randomly crashing on Steam.

Way #5 – Change Compatibility Mode

It has been observed that sometimes the issue lies in how the game is launched on Windows. You should set a compatibility mode to ensure that the game works fine. Here’s how you do it –

Step 1- Go to the launch file for CS-GO on your PC.

Step 2- Right click on the csgo.exe file and go to its properties
Step 3- In properties, go to the Compatibility tab.
Step 4- In the compatibility options, mark the option Run as administrator on your PC.

In the Compatibility tab Check the box Run Program as an Administrator
Step 5- In the same tab, you may find Run this program in Compatibility mode for option. Choose an older version of the OS from the drop-down and save the setting.

(BONUS) – Change fastprox.dll to fastprox.dllold

Another fix that has worked for many users is changing the fastprox.dll file extension to fastprox.dllold

Here’s what you need to do –

Step 1 – Go to Windows File Explorer and copy the following path in the address bar –

C:\Windows\SysWOW64\wbem

Step 2 – This will open the folder for you. In the folder, search for fastprox.dll

Select fastprox.dll - windows explorer
Step 3 – Once you have found the file, rename it to fastprox.dllold

Try running the game now, and it should work fine.
