How To

Way to Fix The Stop Code KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED Error

The KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED stop code is a Blue Screen Of Death error, also referred to as BSOD, that prevents the user from accessing the Windows Desktop Environment. This is a serious error that does not allow the user to perform any task on his/her PC. But this does not mean that you have to purchase a new PC. We have listed a few methods to fix this issue and get your PC back to its optimal state. Without further ado, let us begin.

Why Does The Error Occur?

Here are a few common reasons for the KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED Windows 11/10.

  • When an outdated or corrupted driver misbehaves in kernel mode, Windows has no margin for error and shuts down immediately.
  • When kernel-related files are corrupted due to sudden power loss, malware, or failed Windows updates, Windows cannot process system instructions correctly, which causes this error.
  • Overclocked RAM or a single faulty RAM cell can trigger this error.
  • Any program that interacts with Kernel like antivirus software, VPN clients, VMs, optimization tools, etc, can cause conflicts and generate this error.
  • Outdated or misconfigured BIOS settings can cause KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED in Windows 10/11.
  • Failing hardware components may silently corrupt data, which results in the kernel detecting invalid operations and halting to prevent damage.
  • External USB devices with faulty drivers can crash the kernel.

Fix: KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED Error in Windows

Fix 1. Boot Into Safe Mode

Safe Mode loads only essential drivers, giving you a clean stage to troubleshoot. Here are the steps to fix the KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED stop code

1. Restart your PC
2. Interrupt the boot process 2–3 times to enter Automatic Repair
3. Go to Advanced options → Startup Settings → Restart

4. Press 4 or F4 for Safe Mode

Note : If the error vanishes here, a third-party driver is likely the culprit.

Fix 2. Roll Back Drivers

Incompatible drivers can cause Kernel errors. The idea here is to rollback your drivers to their previous version, which was working properly before the driver update.

1. Press Win + X → Device Manager.

2. Look for drivers with warning icons.
3. Right-click and choose Properties.
4. Choose Roll Back Driver and follow the on-screen process

Editor’s Tip: Update Drivers Using Advanced Driver Updater

The driver rollback process is carried out if the drivers are updated by Windows Update or the device manager installs incompatible updates. The best possible solution is to rollback the driver to its previous version. But if that does not help, then you can update the drivers to their latest version using Advanced Driver Updater.

Advanced Driver Updater is a driver updater tool that scans your PC, identifies driver anomalies, and updates the drivers with a few mouse clicks. Here are the steps to update your drivers.

1. Download & Install Advanced Driver Updater.

2. Open the app and click on the Start Scan Now button.

3. After the scan is complete, click on the Update link next to the driver you wish to update.

4. Reboot your PC to complete the update process.

Fix 3. Run Windows Memory Diagnostic

Faulty RAM can trip this stop code and display BDOD errors. Here are the steps to check your RAM condition.

1. Press Win + R, type mdsched.exe, and click on OK.

2. Choose Restart now and check for problems

3. Let Windows scan your memory for issues while rebooting.

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

4. After the scan and repair process is complete, restart the process.

Some optimization tools, VPNs, and antivirus software can cause conflicts with the kernel and can result in the KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED Windows 11 error. Here are the steps to uninstall apps from your PC.

1. Go to Settings → Apps → Installed apps
2. Remove any recently installed programs

3. Restart and observe

1. Open Control Panel → Power Options

2. Click Choose what the power buttons do

3. Select Change settings that are currently unavailable

4. Uncheck Turn on fast startup
5. Save changes and reboot

Fix 7. Update Windows

Microsoft also provides hardware driver updates to Windows users. However, this process is slow as the driver updates are first submitted to the Windows Team by the third-party manufacturers, where they are analyzed and then uploaded to Windows Servers. Here are the steps to update your drivers using Windows Update.

1. Press Win + X to open the Windows Power Menu and choose Settings.
2. Click on the Windows Update Tab in the left panel.
3. Next, click on the “Check For Updates” button on the right side.

4. Windows will automatically check for updates, download, and install them on your PC.
5. Next, click on Advanced Options.
6. On the new page, click on Optional Updates under Advanced Options.

7. Finally, click Driver Updates and check the box before the drivers you wish to update.
8. Click on the Download & Install button and wait for the update process to complete.
9. Restart the computer.

Fix 8. Check Hardware and BIOS

1. Disconnect external devices (USB drives, printers, hubs)
2. Ensure BIOS is updated from your PC or motherboard manufacturer
3. Reset BIOS to default settings if you recently tweaked it

Fix 9. Use System Restore

If you have created a system restore point before this error occurred, then there is a great chance that you can restore your system back in time to a state before the error occurred. Here is what you need to do.

1. Press the Windows key and type “System restore.

2. Click on “Create A Restore Point.

3. In the new window, click on the System Restore button.

4. Choose a restore point and click on Next to restore your system to a previous point of time.

Fix 10. Perform an In-Place Repair

If nothing works, then perform a reinstallation of the Windows OS.

1. Download the Windows ISO from Microsoft.
2. Mount the ISO and run setup.exe.
3. Choose Keep personal files and apps when prompted.

4. This repairs Windows without losing data.

Bonus Tip: Recover Your Files Using Advanced File Recovery Software

If you lose any files due to accidental deletion or a corrupted hard disk, due to the stop code KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED error, then you can always recover them using Advanced File Recovery. Here is what you need to do.

1. Download Advanced File Recovery using the Download button provided below.

2. Double-click on the downloaded file and follow the onscreen instructions to install the file.

3. Launch the app and choose the drive you wish to scan.

4. Choose the type of files you wish to recover or select “Scan All Data”.

5. Click on the Start Scan button.
6. After the scan is completed, a list of files that can be recovered will be available on the screen, within the app’s interface.

7. Select the files you wish to recover and click on the Recover Now button.
8. Select another drive to recover the deleted files so that the recovered files are not overwritten on the lost files that are being recovered.

9. Wait for the recovery process to complete.
10. A summary will be presented on your screen. You can either recover more files or exit the app.
